Mr. Charles Tackett went through the Formative Assessment training last year. He put together this letter to send home to parents at the beginning of this school year. This letter was to introduce the idea of formative assessment and how it would work in his classroom.
The seventh grade math department (Mr. Brad Bannister and Mrs. Judy Chudzinski) have developed a reflection/correction sheet for students to use with their summative assessments. After the assessment has been completed and "graded" by the teacher it is handed back and the students complete this reflection sheet. It gives the students and opportunity to reflect on their work, make revisions, and seek help if needed.
I made a similar sheet to use with the short answer/extended response questions. Before the papers are passed back, I put examples of answered questions that are weak on the SmartBoard. At their table groups, students try to correct the answers using a team effort. As a large group, answers are shared and then as a class we write a strong response. After I have passed back their own papers students correct their responses. The students have improved greatly when writing their responses and it has taken the "guess work" out of what I want when they are answering short/extended response questions.
